When I lived in San Diego, I wore bicycle belts everywhere. They carried a lot, but it was all banging together in one big pouch.

Then I found something in the luggage department of a Bloomingdale's in Miami, made by Tumi. You sling it across your shoulder by a strap, and it has a place for everything. I can instantly find my wallet, change purse, my license, credit cards, library card, spare pens and scrap paper (since I'm a writer), eyedrops, my car keys; I can even instantly grab out an antacid if someone starts quoting Glenn Beck.Bob Faheynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21162184.post-89336500229054841402010-02-21T01:11:51.342-05:002010-02-21T01:11:51.342-05:00Alice; I remember that piss and vinegar in you, bu...Alice; I remember that piss and vinegar in you, but you do seem to have become a very clear and balanced person. It was always your nature to care about others.
You are absolutely right, I, too, was never active politically until almost 10 years ago when I decided somebody had to stand up for Truth and God, and Fairness. I first noticed it starting to turn when Clinton became President, passed his first bill, and Bob Dole held a press conference with a batch of his colleagues and told the world, Well, we don't know what the next thing is he'll try to pass, but we will be ready to stop him this time!
How can that attitude be good for anyone? For the country, its citizens, or anyone?
I think what we may be seeing now is that those who react thoughtlessly and through sheer emotion are getting more and more isolated, and it is putting more pressure on them, which only riles up even more desperation, fear, and rage. We have FOX News being caught telling more and more lies every day until it has reached a point where those who want to believe them don't dare watch anything else. A coterie of the super wealthy have stirred up a bunch of mindless teabaggers to protest their government raising taxes when they have actually been lowered; protesting because the democrats want them to have fair and honest health care coverage. And have convinced even the media that this corporate takeover is a "Grassroots movement."
We have "Christians" trying to change our school textbooks to put Creationism into science books and remove established scientific theories. A group of them walked out on a science museum talk a few months back when Bill Nye, the science guy told them the moon only reflects light from the sun. Others have told their grammar school charges that Jesus created the dinosaurs. The world is looking at some of this stuff and pronouncing us foolish, and this can only add to the angst and rage of those who function purely from the gut. And since many of these live in areas where guns are praised and "the educated elitists" are ridiculed, how can that ever lead to balance and open, meaningful dialogue? You have seen how such folks react to Obama opening up to diplomacy, rather than blasting away and taking whatever he wants from anyone he has the weapons and manpower to blast the living crap out of.
The times are getting more extreme, but I, for one, think those of us who can still think and be aware should still at least stand up for the value of that.Robert Edward Faheyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00518191781895417192noreply@blogger.com
